Transform any shirt with this easy crop top tutorial!
Difficulty Level: Beginner
Estimated Time: 30 minutes - 1 hour
Materials Needed:
tape measurer
shirt that is too long
pencil or tailor's chalk
sharp scissors
elastic (I used 0.75 inch wide)
needle and thread or sewing machine
sewing pins
Step 1: Put your shirt on inside out and use your chalk or pencil to mark how cropped you want the shirt to be when it's finished.
Step 2: Use a measuring tape to measure the part of your body that you want the shirt to sit (such as your waist). Add 1 inch to this measurement and cut that much elastic.
Step 3: Place your elastic below the mark you made in Step 1. Make a new mark 1/4 of an inch below the bottom edge of the elastic.
Step 4: Use the mark you made in Step 3 to cut off any excess fabric from the shirt.
Step 5: Making sure the shirt is inside-out, fold the fabric at the mark you made in Step 1 and use sewing pins to secure it.
Step 6: Sew around the shirt 1/4 inch from the raw edge. Leave a small gap wide enough for the elastic to fit through
Step 7: Pin one side of your elastic to the shirt and insert the other side into the hem, pulling it through the entire length of the hem until it comes out the other side.
Step 8: Remove the pin from the other side of the elastic, bring both ends together, and pin them to secure them. Sew them together with a zig zag stitch 1/2 inch from the edge of the elastic.
Step 9: Put the elastic back into the hem and sew up the gap you left in Step 6. Remember to backstitch on either side of the stitch to secure it.
Step 10: Flip right side out and your done!
