These simple crochet placemats are perfect for beginners and can be easily modified to create a custom placemat size.

Materials:

  • Size 4 worsted yarn

  • 6 mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

Note: One 380 yd skein of size 4 worsted yarn makes about two and a half placemats of this size.

Pattern:

Foundation: Ch 51

Row 1: Sc into second chain from hook, sc into 50 remaining ch.

Row 2-35: Ch 1. Sc across.

At this point you should have a rectangle that is 50 by 35 sc.

Scalloped Edge:

  • Turn your work as if you were going to start another row, but do not chain 1.

  • In the 3rd sc from your hook, dc 5.

  • Skip 1 sc, slst into next sc.

  • Repeat around. You should end up with 10 scallops on the length and 7 on the width.

Trim and weave in your ends and you're finished!!

Modifications: The scallops need to be in increments of 5 stitches, so as long as you increase/decrease the width or length of the placemat by 5 stitches, you can modify the placemat size however you like.
